Experience- From Facility Administrator to Corporate Officer

My experience in the senior housing industry started in 1978 when I worked as an administrator in training for a large nonprofit retirement community. In 1979 I went on to become an executive director of a troubled nonprofit life care retirement community where I introduced assisted living, an unknown concept at the time.

My first experience working in the for profit retirement industry was in 1983 with Retirement Living Inc. which was purchased by the Forum Group. I held positions with Forum as Regional Director of Operations, Construction Coordinator, Assistant Director of Operations and Design Coordinator. My five year tenure at Forum enabled me to be involved in most of the company's luxury rental retirement communities nationwide. The company was purchased by Marriott Senior Living after I left.

I was Director of Retirement Operations for Central Park Lodges, a Canadian owned senior housing and nursing home company owned by Trizec Corporation in Calgary. I was responsible for 16 communities in Florida that consisted of assisted living, skilled nursing, Alzheimer's care, rental and life care independent living retirement totaling over 1800 units. Several of the properties were distressed when I arrived which enabled me to hone my turnaround skills. I published an article on "Distressed Retirement Communities" aimed at potential buyers of such properties. Central Park Lodges was purchased by Integrated Health Services.

After leaving Central Park Lodges, I went to Greystone Communities as Senior Vice President of Management Services.

I then went to Capital Senior Living as Executive Vice President where I assisted the company President with the day to day operations of skilled nursing, assisted living and retirement communities. I also developed a home health care subsidiary to effectively deal with aging in place in facilities unable to offer assisted living or skilled nursing care.

After leaving Capital I took a one year sabbatical from the field and became a professor of business at Adams State College in Colorado. I taught business and marketing related courses such as business communications, consumer behavior and advertising. My students assisted small businesses in the area with developing effective advertising campaigns and marketing plans. I am known for practicing what I teach. I also did full time consulting with an assisted living company in Kansas and currently do part-time consulting from my home.

I have a masters degree from the University of North Texas Center for Applied Gerontology with an emphasis in senior housing management. I  served as an adjunct professor in the program for two semesters is the 1990s teaching a graduate level senior housing/assisted living development, marketing and management course. The course required the students to prepare a market feasibility study and develop a hypothetical assisted living project.

I have written and published over 20 articles on development, marketing and management issues in senior housing communities. I was involved in the American Senior Housing Association as CO-chair of a national committee that formulated the association's national assisted living regulatory policy.

While in Florida I also assisted the Florida Health Care Association and Florida State Licensure agency to formulate the Extended Congregate Care regulations for assisted living that are used today.

I have had nursing home administrators licenses in Kansas, Tennessee, Delaware, North Carolina and Indiana.

I served on the Board of Advisors for Briefings On Assisted Living, a weekly online assisted living newsletter.

My wife and I moved to the mountains of North Georgia and we established an eco-friendly bed and breakfast inn in August 2003 called Cedar House Inn and Yurts. I used many of my marketing skills obtained over the years in senior housing to develop a successful niche oriented hospitality business that differentiates itself from other lodging options and is positioned effectively in the marketplace.
